Unstaking Wait Periods and What Happens to Your SOL
Unstaking on Solana is a two-step process. First you deactivate the stake account, which removes it from the active set. Then, after a cooldown period spanning one or more epochs, you withdraw the SOL to your wallet.
During deactivation your stake stops earning rewards immediately. The SOL is not liquid until withdrawal completes. Planning ahead is essential if you need access to funds by a specific date.
Re-delegating to a different validator does not require full unstaking. You can change delegation while the stake account remains active, which avoids the cooldown entirely. Many holders unstake unnecessarily because they are unaware of this option.
Network upgrades occasionally adjust cooldown parameters. Check current documentation before assuming timelines based on past experience.
